Fly Fishing For Smallmouth Bass

Smallmouth bass fishing is fun and exciting, in fact I think pound for pound smallmouth bass may just be the hardest fighting freshwater fish on the continent. Catching these fish with conventional spinning or casting gear is an experience in itself, though there is another way to fish for smallmouth bass that gets overlooked by most anglers. That other way as you might have guessed from reading the title of this article is fly fishing for smallmouth bass.

If you have not experienced wrestling spunky smallmouth bass through the swift currents of a swollen river, then you really don’t know what your missing and I highly suggest you break out or buy a fly fishing outfit and give it a try.

While many anglers dread the heat of the summer I look forward to the blazing hot summer months, the top water smallmouth bass action in these parts is superb during the mid and late summer months and there is no better way to catch them off the top than on a fly outfit.

To get the job done you will need a high quality 7 to 8 weight fly fishing outfit. I personal use Bass Pro Shops, White River, Two Seventy Rod and Reel Outfits, these fly fishing outfits are of the highest quality, matching and even surpassing that of higher priced, name brand outfits.

You will also need a decent assortment of flies and plugs, top water is the best, but dont think for a minuet that its the only way to catch smallmouth bass on a fly outfit. Also do not be fooled into thinking you need big flies to catch big smallmouth bass! Small nymphs at times will out fish anything else in your box.
