Lake Erie hosts some of the best smallmouth bass fishing in the world, there is no other body of water that I know of that an angler can go and catch five plus pound smallmouth bass until his or her arm is ready to fall off! Ive fished great smallmouth bas waters before, but nothing like Lake Erie, for instance the Susquehanna River in PA offers some great smallmouth bass fishing in large numbers to, but nothing like Lake Erie! A trip to Lake Erie is truly a bass fishing trip that every smallmouth bass fisherman should take at least once in their life.

The month of May seems to be the best month of the year to fish for smallmouth bass in Lake Erie. Its at this time of the year that the smallmouth bass start to move into shallower waters, to stage up for the spawn and also start becoming very aggressive. Lake Erie is a huge lake and therefor the waters of this huge lake warm very slowly, the shallow areas of the lake and the shorelines are the first to warm and the first to see heavy action.

The baits of choice for smallmouth bass fishing Lake Erie during the spring months are generally jigs and tubes. Spinner baits and crank baits will also work, but the jigs and tubes seem to produce the best.

Though early spring is the best time to fish Lake Erie for smallmouth bass, they are ready and available to catch almost year round. So if you cant take that trip in the early season don’t fret your still going to catch your fair share of smallmouth bass.
