Fishing With My Kids
As much as I love to go bass fishing every chance I get I have not been, nope and I know from talking with other local anglers that I have been missing a good bite. Instead I have been taking the little ones out in search of big catties. Yep you heard that right Ive been spending most of my time on the water bait fishing for big catties and let me tell yah I have been having one hell of a good time.
So how does a hardcore bass man find himself doing more cat fishing than bass fishing? For one my kids love cat fishing, the Channel catties and Blues we pull out of the river here are on an average of about 8 to 20lbs many much, much bigger! My kids love cat fishing, I am not really sure why they would prefer cat fishing over bass fishing, but they do. If I had to guess it would be that cat fishing is much more simple than bass fishing, I think I might have over loaded their senses on the few bass fishing trips we took. Cat fishing is as simple as getting some bait wet, if you can tie a slip rig and bait a hook your good to go. I think the other factor may be the size and numbers of fish they catch when cat fishing. A frisky smallmouth bass is fun, but to a 5 year old a 15lb catfish is the ultimate!
You can bet ill be doing plenty of bass fishing this season, but as of right now I am savoring the moments spend watching these kids wrestle with big cat fish. It has really been a very spiritual event. There is nothing like watching your kids truly enjoying something (fishing) that has been a part of you since you were knee high to a grasshopper.
So in parting Id like to suggest that you, if you dont already, grab your kids, grand kids or even the neighbors kids that may not have a fishing father and hit the water with them. Take a kid fishing, it truly is something special!
