Choosing Quality Spinner Baits

When it comes to purchasing spinner baits you literally have thousands of options. Spinner baits come in so many different sizes, shapes, colors and materials that its hard to know which baits are the winners and which are the losers. Here are some failsafe tips to choosing quality spinner baits.

Choose a spinner bait that is constructed of heavy gauge wire; I dont think many bass anglers take this into consideration when purchasing their spinner baits, yet it is such an important detail. Any spinner bait with a gauge of less than .045 just wont cut it when it comes to bass fishing. The cost of a small gauge spinner bait is usually less than one made with heavy gauge wire, though spending the extra money will save you allot of grief! Spinner made of light weight wire bend and become useless very quickly, sometimes after a few casts or the first hang up.

Choose a spinner bait with high quality hooks; There are so many manufacturers out there that use garbage hooks on their spinner baits. It cuts costs and they know the majority of bass anglers wont even consider that aspect of their bait when making a purchase. My advise on this is simple, NEVER buy a spinner bait unless the manufacturer has which hooks it uses on the spinner bait clearly marked! This way there is no guess work and you know exactly what you are getting.

Choose a spinner baits with high quality skirts;
Ever store a spinner bait away only to find out the next time you go to use it that the skirt has melted and turned into a sticky mess? If not you are either already buying high quality spinner baits or you have lucked out thus far. Premium silicone skirts are the only way to go! There are times rubber skirts do seem to outperform silicone, for these situations keep a few spare rubber skirts laying around that you can swap out when needed.

Choosing Spinner Baits With Quality Blades
I wont go into the thousands of different styles and options out there when it comes to blades, but what I will touch base on here is the quality of those blades. The blades of a spinner bait need to be made of high quality material, the finish on the blades needs to be durable, so that they resist fading and chipping. Also each blade needs to do its job, which means it must be formed correctly, it must displace the right amount of water and provide maximum vibration.

Unfortunately for this there is no easy answer, you will have to test various different blades while fishing them. The other tips above can generally be followed while the bait is still in store.

These points should help you in choosing high quality spinner baits, I hope they helped and I also hope they saved you some money, time and frustration.
